MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS

Low Country Saddle Club

APRIL 2007 NEWSLETTER

Well, the meeting/campout/cleanup weekend at Mullet Hall was, as usual, great fun.  Of course, this time it was A LOT OF WORK!!

Want to thank all the members who came out to work.  They are:

Wendy Jackson, Tammy Kindt, Susan Tillman, Mandy Buchanan, Ray Tanner, Otis Bryson, John DuBose, Linda Taylor, Lyn Crull, Debbie McDaniel, Margie Logan, Sandee and Lenny Melcher (new members no less!) , BB Weavil, Tina and Bill Bennett, Mark and Jo Swain, and Mark, Peggie and Jordan Boyer.

AND A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO MARK BOYER FOR BRINGING OUT THE MINI EXCAVATOR.  WITHOUT HIM AND HIS MACHINE, WE WOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN NEARLY AS MUCH DONE AS WE DID.

THANK YOU MARK!!!

The clean up was so that the CCPR can add at least 8 camping sites to the trail head side of Mullet Hall.  The sites will be against the woods between the show grounds and the trail head, and will start at the water supply area and go down to the bathhouse.

I’ve sent out pictures of the clean up via 3 separate emails just so everybody could get an idea of how much work was done by everyone who showed up that Saturday morning.  THANK YOU BB WEAVIL FOR ALL THE GREAT PHOTOS!

We also had our meeting Saturday at about 1230pm.  There were 23 members present.  We had four new members.  Welcome to Sandee and Lenny Melcher from Ridgeville and to Robin and Daniel Polasek of Wadmalaw Island.

Again, the Pal-O-Mine 4-H group did their usual FANTASTIC job of cooking those great hamburgers and hot dogs.  THANK YOU!

Wendy Jackson of CCPRC discussed the email she had sent out to everybody.  She said again that while a show is going on at the show grounds, trail riders were not allowed to ride on the actual show grounds.  They are to keep their horses on the trail side of Mullet Hall.  This is so that the horses in the show rings won’t be distracted by anything other than the normal show environment.  I know these show people work hard to get their horses working right and spend a lot of money to enter the classes, so we need to not disturb them in any way.  Also, they do pay to rent the show facilities during that weekend.  We’re still welcome to come watch the show, but are asked to leave our horses at the trail head at our trailers when we come over.

Wendy also discussed the Mullet Hall T-shirt contest.  The CCPR is looking for a slogan to put on a T-shirt just for Mullet Hall.  If anyone comes up with a slogan that the CCPR decides to use on the t-shirt, that person will win a year’s free membership to Mullet Hall.

Wendy commented that the gate to the trail side has been left open on several occasions.  IT MUST BE LOCKED BY THE LAST PERSON OUT THAT DAY.  Also, when locking, don’t forget to lock and THEN SPIN THE DIAL..

Ray Tanner and Wendy also thanked everyone who turned out for giving so much help at the cleanup.  It really impressed the “powers that be” at the CCPR.

In addition to the 8 camping sites on the trail side, CCPR also plans to add 8 more camping sites between the show barn and the bathhouse.

Wendy handed out surveys to anyone who wanted to fill them out.  They were a satisfaction survey for the Park.

There was a very informative presentation on equine dentistry that was given by Amy Dobranski, equine dentist from Aiken, SC.  If anyone is interested in obtaining her services (and there are quite a few Saddle Club members who currently have her do their horses’ teeth) her phone numbers are:  Cell:  803-221-2568; also two other numbers (assuming home) are:  803-649-5546 and 803-649-3925.  Her email address is:  AMYDOBRANSKI@yahoo.com.  She really does a great job.

Two door prizes were donated by Red Top Country Stop.  Cindy Judelsohn won a feed tub and Mark Swain won horse treats.

Meeting adjourned.

Next meeting to be held 8 May 2007, 7:30 pm, at Berkeley Electric Coop on Maybank Highway unless anyone has any other suggestions for a meeting place.  If so, PLEASE let me know soon so I can set it up.

LCSC NEWSLETTER MARCH, 2007

March Saddle Club meeting was held at Gilligan’s Restaurant, Johns Island.  There were 16 members there with one new member.

Our new member is Linda Sigman, Johns Island.  She has a Peruvian Paso mare and has an extensive background in showing these horses.  Welcome Linda!

Lots of things were discussed.

Elena Lamberson would like someone else to take over the Club website.  Bill Bennett has one of his employees who will take over this duty until we can find someone else to do it.  In order to do this, the Club needs to buy a computer program to run the website.  It was voted on and carried that we’d do this.  Bill and Tina Bennett will handle getting the new program and getting it up and running.

We talked about getting Club t-shirts.  Kathy Swanson is to investigate this and also check on possibly getting a discount from tack/feed stores in exchange for putting their names on our website with a link to their business.    EVERYBODY – PLEASE CHECK AROUND AND SEE IF YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO’D LIKE TO ADVERTISE OR HAVE THEIR BUSINESS LISTED ON OUR WEBSITE.     Will have to get back to you on how much we’d charge for a sponsorship.

The Club has a large 10x20 canopy that John DuBose was storing at his place.  It needed a new home so now it has one – a storage area at Mullet Hall.  That’s where we’d be using it most of the time anyway!

Ray Tanner spoke of the Mullet Hall privileges that are afforded to our saddle club that non-saddle club members don’t get.  He suggested that we, as a Club, should show our appreciation by having a “help” day at Mullet Hall.  Members present agreed, so the “help” day will be the weekend of our next meeting/campout at Mullet Hall, April 14.  Members should bring along tools such as chain saws, loppers, bow saw, gloves, etc. that can be used to clean up brush on a new “road/path” from the trail head parking area to the new bathhouse.  Mullet Hall has the equipment to haul off the limbs, etc., which Ray Tanner can do.

The bathrooms at Mullet Hall are functional now.  The toilet partititions have arrived.  As of this minute, they may already be up.  The showers will have doors on them.

Trail riding on Seabrook Beach was discussed.  Jo Swain says anyone can ride there.  Have to make a reservation, check in at the barn, and pay $25/person.  Jo will get more info and report at next meeting.

BEST OF AMERICA BY HORSEBACK RIDE AT LAKEVIEW!!  What a blast!  There were 10 Saddle Club members there and we all had a fantastic time.  I believe the horse count was 180, last I heard.

There weren’t too many decorated horse/rider combinations (for St. Patrick’s Day), but guess who 90% of them were???  Lowcountry Saddle Club members!  The outfits ranged from hats and painted shamrocks on the horses to a green mullet wig on the rider.  We’ll have pictures at the next meeting to show everybody.

The weather couldn’t have been prettier.  The Best of America trail ride was on Saturday.  It was exciting to see the cameras rolling and pictures being taken of all the riders before they went out on the ride.  Also, there were camera crew all along the trail.  Pat Seay, host of Best of America by Horseback, promised that all the riders would be seen on the show.  It’s to air in July on RFD-TV.

There were lots of vendors there too.  Horse trailer reps, Tucker Saddle rep, independent tack dealer, CSI saddle pads rep, saddle fitting demos, even a trainer/clinician, Kerry Kuhn, an equestrian drill team from Georgia, a farrier, a number of bands, and lots of others.

The supper that evening was outstanding.   No slacking off there!  We had china plates, crystalware, silverware, table cloths and linen napkins.  Class A act!  Food was great – sliced beef and gravy or roasted chicken, squash casserole, twice baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and peach cobbler for dessert.

After the meal, everybody who participated in the ride was given a certificate.  Then we could go up to the meet and greet table and have Pat Seay autograph his picture and/or our certificates.  Really nice person!!   He went around to all the tables and thanked everybody for coming out for the ride.

Also met two prospective members at this ride.  They plan to join and come to the April meeting.

Next meeting will be at Mullet Hall on 13-15 April 2007 with meeting at about 1230 pm.  Don't forget your work tools.

LCSC NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY, 2007

The Lakeview Plantation Club Ride was really awesome!  Altho the wind had us hanging on for dear life to anything that would anchor us down, we all seemed to have a great time.  The temps weren’t all that bad, but BOY THAT WIND!

Didn’t really take a head count of how many came (we had 32 signed up to go), but the dinner table was FULL!!   Had great food and great camaraderie.  Even met some new people, some from Mississippi and two from NE Georgia.

If anybody has pictures of the ride they’d like to share, please bring them to the next meeting.

Our last meeting, 13 Feb was at Berkeley Elec Coop and we had 17 members there! Besides talking about the Lakeview Club Ride, we discussed a number of other things.

I was in contact with Wendy Jackson of Mullet Hall regarding the possibility of our April meeting being held at Mullet Hall with overnight camping.  Wendy says that 13-15 April will be open for us to use the camping facilities (so I booked it).  We will, of course, have to pay all the regular CCPR fees.

Ray Tanner commented that he had gotten quite a few favorable comments on the Extreme Trail Competition and Poker Run we had at Mullet Hall.  So he thought it would be a good idea to use some of those obstacles that we had and make them and others into a permanent trail obstacle course at the Mullet.

Ray also reported that the bathrooms/showers were coming along well.  Says Wendy will push to have them completed for the horse show being held on 3 March.

The Club members also discussed possibly having another Trail Competition/Poker Run maybe twice a year to raise money for the Club for more outings and possibly for a charitable donation too.

Lyn Crull brought up the Poplar Grove Hunter Pace/Trail Ride that she attended in January.  It was such a nice place, she thinks possibly the Club would want to ride there as a group sometime.  It’s at least an eleven mile ride.

Discussed having our March meeting at Gilligan’s since everybody has to eat anyway before or after they come to a meeting.  Thought it would be fun to have a supper meeting.  I talked with Gilligan’s manager today (26 Feb) and he said we could have the meeting there in the main dining area.  I just have to call him the day of the meeting to give him a “heads up” on how many will be there and what time so they can have an area set up for us.

SO WHAT DOES EVERYBODY THINK ABOUT HAVING A SUPPER MEETING AT GILLIGAN’S OR BUBBA QUES (in Ravenel)??  It would seem our usual 7:30 pm meeting time would be a little late to meet and eat.  So I thought I’d set the time for 6:30 PM on 13 March at Gilligan’s or Bubba Ques.   I need to know your preference and any problems with the time.  Need to know no later than Sunday evening, 11 March.

Debbie McDaniel is out of the hospital and recovering nicely at home.  The Club sent her a very pretty potted orchid and a get well card.

There are some upcoming trail rides.  Please check out this website.  Some of the rides have a link you can click on and others just have a phone number.    www.judgesridelist.com.

Also don’t forget the Ashe Hill Ride coming up on March 30 – April 1.  Also the Relay for Life Ride and Auction on 9-11 March.  If anybody needs a flyer for these two rides, let me know and I’ll email them to you.

Lindsay Cobb is going to send me a flyer for the SC Qtr Horse Assn spring ride at Lakeview.  I’ll pass it along to all.

Also, if you didn’t get a new membership list, let me know that too.

LCSC NEWSLETTER January, 2007

Well, everybody, the first meeting of the Lowcountry Saddle Club for the year 2007 seemed to be a real hit with lots of people.  Having it at Mullet Hall allowed old friendships to be renewed, new friendships to be made, and gossip to be caught up on.

We had a great turnout with 45 members coming and six new members joining.  The Pal-O-Mine 4-H Club with Terri Skinner provided the food – really delicious grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, chili, and EVEN FRENCH FRIES!!

At the meeting we discussed the usual -  last meeting’s minutes and treasurer’s report.

Then, since everyone was having such a good time, it was suggested, seconded and carried that the Club try to have at least one meeting, quarterly, at Mullet Hall with the same great food being provided by those girls from the 4-H Club!  So, I’ll be checking with Wendy Jackson with Mullet Hall/CCPR to see if we can have our April meeting on the 13-15th at Mullet Hall.  Will let you know.

The subject of the Club’s outing to Lakeview on February 17-19 was discussed.  Normally, Lakeview has a President’s Day ride, but this year they cancelled it.  So, we’ll have the whole Lakeview camping area basically to ourselves, except for the occasional camper.

BB Weavil gave a great, well thought out presentation on Lakeview.  She told us about the types of stalling facilities for the horses (square panel pens, tie lines, or your own portable corrals), gave the website info for Lakeview, and had registration forms handy for any one interested to fill out.  A motion was made, seconded, and carried for the Club to pay for dinner for members only @ $12/person.  Number of meals the Club can afford depends on number of participants.  SOOOO, please get your registration forms in NOW to Lakeview.  EACH PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS/HER OWN REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND PAYMENT  TO LAKEVIEW.  When you fill in the forms, where the meals are concerned, just note that you’re with the LCSC.

I’ve sent out all the trail ride info I’ve gotten, including the Best of America by Horseback Ride at Lakeview on 16-18 March 2007.  Registration forms are available at the Lakeview website.  www.lakeviewplantation.com.  They’ve limited the number of guests for this particular event to only 200 so you’ll have to get your applications in fast if you don’t want to miss it.

Otis Bryson asked that members be thinking of ideas for some fun events for the Club to do.  Or if you know of anyone who could come demonstrate some particular activity, type of training, games on horseback, etc., PLEASE let us know.  You can send your comments/ideas to me, Tina Bennett, at wahalisoc1@aol.com, or call me at home, 559-1202.  Also, if you have suggestions as to fun places (instead of Berkeley Electric!) for our meetings, we’d appreciate that too.  Maybe for one meeting we could meet at a restaurant, say Gilligan’s,  or some other place that would have a meeting type room (at no charge, of course!).  PLEASE, WE WANT YOUR INPUT AS MEMBERS!  We’ll listen to all comments/suggestions.  We want everybody to be involved with the Club and have fun!  That’s what it’s all about.

Terri Skinner is a Sector Director for the SC Pinto Horse Association and she has volunteered to help anyone who wants to register their pinto horse with the Association.  Also, she can talk about the various riding programs the SCPHA has to offer.  We’ll get her scheduled to make a presentation for the Club.

Well, that was about it.  We really had a great time.  For those of you who couldn’t make it this time, maybe we’ll see you the next time we have our meeting at the Mullet.

NEXT LOWCOUNTRY SADDLE CLUB MEETING WILL BE AT BERKELEY ELECTRIC CO-OP, MAYBANK HIGHWAY, JOHNS ISLAND, ON FEBRUARY 13TH AT 7:30PM.
